In a more usual triband beam, I would want another Cushcraft A4. It is just that when you get away from "compromise antennas" as much as you can, the difference can be very noticeable. That being said, I don't compare well to others around here who have bigger antennas than I do at somewhat similar locations. I hear him in the pileups and find that I invariably have worked the station long before he does ( if he does) and hear him quit calling in the pileup for not hearing the DX any longer when I can still hear it well enough to keep calling if I had needed to. he is at about the same elevation and uses an amplifier same as me. The only thing I would consider changing to is one of the larger 5 band Optibeams but the size and especially the cost is high so not worth it.Ī ham north of me a couple miles has a 5 band hex beam. Cost of making that change and loss of 2 bands would rule it out for me. It is something only you can decide about though.
